Knowledge can be seen as the most valuable resource in any organization
and society. It empowers us to think, evaluate, analyze and act. "Knowledge 
Management" is a fairly new concept but it has been practiced for a long
time. It is very natural for people to build and share knowledge with one
another and apply it amongst others in an economic context.  Due to the 
development and the introduction of the knowledge economy KM has evolved
as a more important scientific concept in the context of organization and
management theory and many disciplines have laid some claims on it 
-including Library and Information Science.

Currently KM is the subject of theoretical discourse and practical
application. Both the theory and practical applications are however in a
developing stage. This presentation will focus both these issues. 
Dr Britz will give an overview of the current status regarding the 
theoretical discourse and Shelly Schnupp, former Vice President of KM for 
a nonprofit organization will share her views on the application of KM in 
a non-profit setting.
