The Ohio Valley Area Libraries (OVAL) Regional Library System, located in
Wellston, Ohio, is pleased to announce the following professional &
technical training opportunities for the months of September and October
2002.
All OVAL professional & technical training opportunities apply toward
renewal of your Ohio Public Library Certification.

WEEDING WITH THE CREW METHOD

Is weeding really necessary? Will anyone really notice the difference if it
isnt done? Isnt it just a subjective process without any rhyme or reason?
Yes, yes, and NO! Come explore the straightforward guidelines recommended in
The CREW Method, a nationally recognized tool for intelligent deselection.
Through hands-on weeding in an actual library collection, participants will
discover for themselves that these methods really work! Each person
attending will receive a copy of the weeding manual. Refreshments will be
served at the beginning of the workshop. Lunch may be taken at the
conclusion of the workshop.

As a teacher working with elementary through high school students you are
always looking for innovative methods to discuss books and tie them into the
curriculum. LETS TALK ABOUT IT and HELPING BOOKS HELPING FAMILIES may fill
the bill for starting such a book discussion group in your school. Ruth
Metcalf, State Library Development Consultant for Family Literacy, and
Roxane Oakley, State Library Development Consultant for School Libraries,
will discuss these programs and offer practical advice on implementing a
book discussion program in your school.

Do you ever wonder how to best direct your patrons to the legal materials
they need? How to conduct a reference interview? Come to this workshop and
learn from Ms. Orlando the specifics of legal reference issues. Workshop
participants will learn how to conduct a legal reference interview and how
to refer patrons to the appropriate legal material, both in print and
on-line. There will be a discussion on the limits of legal reference and the
unauthorized practice of law.
LIABILITY AND THE PROBLEM PATRON

Do you find yourself caught in the gray area of giving legal advice to
library patrons? Come to this workshop and learn to how to walk the line of
helpful librarian without crossing over into legal advisor. Workshop
participants will learn from Ms. Orlando the basics of liability law,
including ways to avoid liability resulting from problem patrons. Please
bring your questions regarding specific library scenarios!
WHAT THE STATE LIBRARY CAN DO FOR YOU!
Presented by: Jay Burton, Head, Library Programs & Development, State
Library of Ohio

Do you know what the State Library can offer you? Jay Burton will give you
the information you need to answer this question. First, you will get a
brief overview on the history of the State Library and its move to a new
facility. Then you will learn about all the services the State Library has
to offer both Ohio citizens and librarians, such as access to reference,
research, genealogy, and government materials. You will get an update on the
Planning, Evaluation and Research department of the State Library and the
services this division has to offer, such as data collection. You will get
an update on the Library Programs and Development department and its
services. Jay will finish with the most up-to-date details on OPLIN,
Librarians Toolkit, Gates Grant, and 24/7. You can follow along at your
computer workstation for hands-on experience. Your questions will be
answered throughout this interactive workshop. Come discover a hidden
