Library and Information Science Education
The University of Southern Mississippi invites nominations and applications
for two tenure-track
positions at the Assistant Professor level in the School of Library and
Information Science
(http://www-dept.usm.edu/~slis). Required qualifications: Ph.D. in library
and information
science or one anticipated within the academic year; demonstrated skills
with current information
technology. The successful candidate will be competent with information and
communications
technologies, services to multicultural populations, and interdisciplinary
approaches to
information problems. The candidate will have a research agenda, expertise,
and ability to teach in
one or more of the following areas: information storage/retrieval; digital
libraries; reference;
database design and management; information architecture; library
foundations; public or
technical services; children's and young adult services; information
transfer; archival
management; preservation; developing information technologies; and systems
analysis. Faculty
are expected to participate in development and delivery of courses via the
Internet, be proactive
in grant and proposal writing, research and publishing, be contributing
members of the library and
information communities, and serve on faculty and university committees.
The University of Southern Mississippi is located in Hattiesburg,
Mississippi, the commercial and
medical hub of southern Mississippi, with a population of more than 100,000
and offering the
safety and friendliness of a small town along with the diversity and
excitement of a small city.
Beautifully situated in the Pine Belt, the university is within easy
driving distance of New Orleans,
Jackson, Mobile, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Florida panhandle. USM is a
Carnegie Extensive
Research Institution with more than 15,000 students on two primary
campuses, Hattiesburg, and
the Gulf Coast.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications. Preferred starting date is
January 2003, but may
be later depending on individual circumstances. Review of applications will
