LET’S TALK ABOUT IT. . . BOOK DISCUSSION PROGRAMS FOR SCHOOLS!

As a teacher working with elementary through high school students you are
always looking for innovative methods to discuss books and tie them into the
curriculum. LET’S TALK ABOUT IT and HELPING BOOKS HELPING FAMILIES may fill
the bill for starting such a book discussion group in your school. Ruth
Metcalf, State Library Development Consultant for Family Literacy, and
Roxane Oakley, State Library Development Consultant for School Libraries,
will discuss these programs and offer practical advice on implementing a
book discussion program in your school.

they need? How to conduct a reference interview? Come to this workshop and
learn from Ms. Orlando the specifics of legal reference issues. Workshop
participants will learn how to conduct a legal reference interview and how
to refer patrons to the appropriate legal material, both in print and
on-line. There will be a discussion on the limits of legal reference and the
unauthorized practice of law.

WHAT THE STATE LIBRARY CAN DO FOR YOU!

Planning, Evaluation and Research department of the State Library and the
services this division has to offer, such as data collection. You will get
an update on the Library Programs and Development department and its

OHIO BICENTENNIAL: RESOURCES FOR EXCELLENT REFERENCE SERVICES

to find a better life for themselves? That the Ohio River was one of the
greatest highways moving people from the east to the west, to settle the

STORYTELLING: BRIDGING THE GAP THROUGH PUPPETS

Grab your glue and scissors and head out for a day of fun! Join OVAL as we
welcome retired (but not tired) teacher Melinda Dannemiller for a busy day
of learning and laughing. In the morning session you will learn the
difference between storytelling and reading stories. You will learn the
value/use of storytelling with puppets and will view demonstrations of a
storytelling using puppets. You will learn the skills essential for
successful storytelling and the secrets for choosing which stories to tell.
In the afternoon session, it will be your turn to make puppets as Melinda
turns you loose with your creativity! Melinda will provide materials, socks,
gloves, etc. Attendees need to bring white glue and scissors.



NATIVE AMERICAN GENEALOGY AND COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT

Presented by: John Beckett, NAEDA; and John Wills, NACA

When library patrons come to you and want to trace their Native American
heritage, want to learn more about Native American culture or history, or
want a way to be in contact with other Native Americans-- you need
resources, materials and knowledge to answer these questions.  Come to this
workshop and learn which materials to purchase for your library, which web
sites and organizations are most accurate and beneficial, and how to direct
research of Native American heritage.  Approximately one third of this
presentation will focus on genealogical resources for tracing Native
American roots.  Another third of the presentation will focus on general
collection development-- which books, magazines and other print resources
most accurately reflect Native American culture and would therefore be an
asset to your library.  The last third of the presentation will focus on
other resources, such as web sites, associations and organizations that
could be helpful regarding Native American history, heritage and culture.



OHIO, ALL FOR THE UNION: OHIO CIVIL WAR RESOURCES

Ohio was the third largest contributor of men to the Union war effort. The
Union armies were guided to victory by Ohioans.  For five Ohioans, the war
paved the road to the White House. This introduction to print and electronic
historical and genealogical resources will help answer questions about the
role of the state and its people from students, researchers and genealogists
during Ohio's Bicentennial year.



THE ABC'S OF DISABILITY AWARENESS: PEOPLE FIRST, DISABILITY SECOND

Presented by: Laura Gold, Director, ADA/Accessibility Services, Services for
Independent Living, Cleveland

Location: Northside Branch, Chillicothe & Ross County Public Library, 550
Buckeye St., Chillicothe

Public libraries, as well as all public facilities, serve a large variety of
different peoples with different needs. Of these peoples, those with
disabilities have very particular needs. At this workshop, participants will
learn how to best serve the needs of the disabled population from a member
of that population. Presenter Laura Gold is the Director of the
ADA/Accessibility Services in Cleveland. Aside from her professional
accreditation, Ms. Gold will be able to give true insight into serving those
with disabilities because of her own hearing impairment. Come and learn from
Ms. Gold how to make your library or public facility conducive to the needs
of the disabled population.



PICTURE BOOK READ-IN & MOCK CALDECOTT ELECTION

Presented by: Sue McCleaf Nespeca, Kid Lit Plus Consulting

Who decides on the national book awards for children? What is the process?
What makes the Caldecott Award unique among the awards given to children's
books? What are some of the best picture books released in 2002? Come hear
about the award process and have an opportunity to vote on your favorite
picture book for the coveted Caldecott Award. Then see how OVAL's winners
compare with the real ones to be announced in January 2003. Sue McCleaf
Nespeca from Kid Lit Plus Consulting, member of the 1993 Caldecott Committee
and Chair of the 2003 Sibert Committee (Informational Books) will answer
these questions and direct the mock election.
