Job Description: Dean, School of Library & Information Science
The Catholic University of America invites applications for the position
of dean of the School of Library & Information Science. This
ALA-accredited school, located in the Nation's capital, enrolls 270 full
time and part time students on the Washington campus, at the Library of
Congress, & at three sites in Virginia. It offers graduate programs
including a master's degree, post-master's certificate in library and
information science, & joint degrees with law, musicology, history,
English, biology, Greek & Latin, & religious studies.
The school seeks a dean with the commitment and vision to lead the
school through a period of expansion in enrollments and programs. The
dean administers & coordinates the activities of the school & reports to
the Provost; provides leadership in teaching & research; articulates the
mission of the school to internal & external constituencies; maintains
strong liaisons with a wide range of campus & professional
constituencies; and actively engages in fund raising & grant seeking
activities to support students, faculty, and programs.
Required qualifications include:
>A record of academic achievement commensurate with a senior
level faculty appointment;
>Experience in academic administration including management of
fiscal & human resources;
>A clear commitment to collaborative leadership and excellence
in teaching, research and professional service;
>A commitment to cultural diversity & equal opportunity;
>A commitment to the mission of The Catholic University of
America as a religious institution of higher learning & an understanding
of issues important to Catholic identity;
>An earned doctorate in library and information science or a
closely related field, or commensurate background.
The dean should have a strong interest in the school's distance learning
education program, appreciate interdisciplinary research, & be willing
to make a long-term commitment to the school.
