[Asis-l] Roger Flynn Honored

University of Pittsburgh Chancellor Mark A. Nordenberg recently honored 
four faculty members for outstanding contributions to the community through 
public service.  One of these four is Dr. Roger E. Flynn, associate 
professor in the Department of Information Science and Telecommunications 
(DIST) in the School of Information Sciences.  Dr. Flynn was applauded by 
Chancellor Nordenberg for his "impressive efforts in teaching courses and 
advising on computer systems and laboratories" at the State Correctional 
Institution in Pittsburgh (SCIP), a maximum security prison, and for his 
dedication to the general welfare of humankind in the community.  Over the 
past 12 years, Flynn taught 14 different courses in addition to his 
teaching and advising in DIST.  Because of his efforts, some inmates went 
on to graduate in information science, others were able to get jobs when 
they left prison, and those with life sentences were able to apply their 
expertise within the prison system.  Even when the program at SCIP was 
terminated, Flynn continued to provide informal courses on a voluntary 
basis as well as tutoring and advisory services.

Dr. Flynn joined the SIS faculty in 1977.  The author of the highly 
regarded Introduction to Information Science (Marcel Dekker, Inc., N. Y. 
and Basel, 1987), Dr. Flynn has taught a wide range of courses at the 
undergraduate and graduate levels, including data structures, various 
programming languages and systems analysis and design.

Dean Toni Carbo said:  "We are delighted that Dr. Flynn has received this 
recognition for his more than 12 years of dedicated service to individuals 
at the prison.  He has done all this on top of his many responsibilities at 
our School.  He has had a very positive impact on the lives on hundreds of 
students."

The School of Information Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh educates 
information professionals for a wide range of specializations in the 
information field.  The School's focus is on the integration of people, 
knowledge, and technology for decision making, problem solving, and
