HEAD, ACQUISITIONS SERVICES DEPARTMENT - UNIVERSITY AT ALBANY LIBRARIES

RESPONSIBILITIES: The University at Albany seeks a librarian to manage the 
operations of a highly automated Acquisitions Services Department. 
Responsibilities include overseeing all aspects of 
acquisitions  (monographic and serial information in all formats, approval 
plans, budget management, management of contracts and licenses, and the 
purchase of books with cataloging records). Works in close cooperation with 
the Assistant Director for Collections to manage an annual acquisitions 
budget of approximately $5 million. Provides leadership in training and 
staff development for 5 paraprofessionals and 13 classified service 
staff.  Working cooperatively with the Department's staff and others as 
appropriate, sets goals, establishes priorities and work flow, and leads 
the ongoing review of departmental policies, procedures and 
organization.  Encourages and recognizes excellence. Fosters effective 
communication and teamwork within the department and with other departments 
within the Libraries.  Leads the Department in the evaluation and 
efficient, innovative use of new technologies in a changing environment. 
Works cooperatively with other Technical Services department heads to 
facilitate communication and efficient work flow. Research, publication and 
service to the Libraries, university and profession are expected to satisfy 
criteria for continuing appointment and promotion. Reports to the Assistant 
Director for Technical Services and Systems.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:  Graduate degree in librarianship from an ALA - accredited 
institution and experience using an automated system in a medium size or 
large academic library or related environment. Demonstrated managerial, 
planning, and supervisory experience, leadership, communication and 
interpersonal skills.  Direct knowledge of at least one national 
bibliographic utility. Demonstrated ability to take an active role in 
planning and implementing system upgrades, maximizing system 
efficiency.  Demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging trends in 
libraries and higher education and the acquisition of library resources in 
all formats.

Preferred: The successful candidate should have experience with various 
aspects of acquisitions as well as knowledge of standards and issues 
relating to acquisitions, familiarity with MARC formats and trends in 
technical services and automation.

Desired:  Reading knowledge of one or more western European or East Asian 
languages.

SALARY:
Commensurate with education and experience.  Salary minima: $36,200 for 
Assistant Librarian and $42,575 for Senior Assistant Librarian.
TERMS:
Twelve month appointment.

Albany=s University Libraries are among the top 100 research libraries in 
the United States.  They are a highly valued partner in teaching and 
research at the University, serve a campus community of 16,000 full-time 
and part-time students and 2,300 faculty and staff and a broader regional, 
national and international community.   The Libraries employ a dynamic and 
knowledgeable staff of 146 FTE and 300 part-time student assistants to 
provide excellent services to a campus community that makes heavy demands 
on these services.  Collections total 2 million cataloged volumes and the 
Libraries offer a full spectrum of resources, from rare books and 
manuscripts to an array of electronic resources.  Librarians work closely 
with teaching faculty to offer an extensive program of user education and 
information literacy instruction.  The University Library on the main 
campus is a large 175,000 square feet, 4 story building providing seats for 
1,660.  It is open 109 hours a week.  It contains several fully-networked 
library classrooms and laboratories, a 60 seat computer user room, a large 
networked reference area, and an interactive media center.

The Thomas E. Dewey Graduate Library for Public Affairs and Policy on the 
Rockefeller College campus serves the graduate schools of Criminal Justice, 
Public Administration, Social Welfare and Information Science and 
Policy.  The New Library, opened in September 1999, on the main campus adds 
143,000 net square feet of space to the University Libraries and houses a 
technologically advanced, 500,000 volume science library, the M. E. 
Grenander Department of Special Collections and Archives, and the Library=s 
Preservation Department.

The University Libraries  are  fully automated.  ADVANCEWeb, the Libraries= 
ADVANCE system contains information on all cataloged holdings and is 
Internet accessible.  The Libraries provide an extensive array of 
electronic and networked resources and Web-accessible services.  They are 
members of the Association of Research Libraries, The Research Libraries 
Group and The Center for Research Libraries.  Additional information about
