INTRODUCTION TO FUNDRAISING AND DEVELOPMENT
FOR NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS
presented by David S. Guion, Development Consultant, Columbus

This introductory workshop to fundraising research, grants writing, and
development will provide step-by-step assistance for a better understanding
of foundations, corporations, and individual giving. Geared for nonprofit
organizations, the workshop delves into the intricacies of fundraising on a
variety of levels and through various means. The workshop will provide the
participants with concrete ideas and strategies for funding their
organizations. Through Question and Answer sessions and a variety of
handouts, the presentation will be tailored to the participants' specific
needs, providing clarification and assistance for specific interests and
varying organizational complexities.

Morning Session:
Foundation Grant Research: Exploration of foundation research with emphasis
on exploring resources, foundation interests, and priorities of local,
state, and national foundations.
Foundation Grant Writing: A step-by-step guide to writing effective
proposals.
Individual Solicitation: Direct mail basics, creating fundraising letters
and brochures for increasing contributions by individuals.
Question and Answer Session

Afternoon Session:
Corporate Sponsorship Research: Exploration of corporate sponsorship and
collaborative marketing opportunities.
Corporate Grant Research and Writing: Researching and writing grants for
local, state, and national corporations, with emphasis on corporate
deadlines, priorities, and guidelines.
Special Events Planning: Conception, planning, and implementation of
successful special events.
Question and Answer Session

About our presenter: Mr. Guion has worked in the nonprofit industry since
1986, raising over $13 million for a variety of arts organizations and
educational institutions in New York City, in the Bay Area of California,
and Columbus, Ohio. He has served in the capacity of executive director,
development director, fundraising/grants research consultant, and
development associate for organizations with budgets ranging from $15
million to $400,000. He received a B.S. in Hotel, Restaurant, and
Institutional Management from the Pennsylvania State University in 1984. He
completed an M.A. in Arts Education/Arts Administration from The Ohio State
University, with a research concentration in corporate support of the arts.
Recently awarded the distinguished Lawrence and Isabel Barnett Fellowship
for the 2003 and 2004 academic years, he is completing his Ph.D. at The Ohio
State University in the department of Art Education/Arts Policy and
Administration. Mr. Guion currently holds a graduate associate position
researching and writing foundation and government grants for the department
of Art Education. As a development consultant in Columbus, Ohio, he
researches and writes grants for the Ohio Arts Council, the OSU
Multicultural Center, the OSU Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and
Design, and the Ruben Community Center. Mr. Guion is currently teaching
fundraising workshops for a variety of nonprofit organizations and nonprofit
professionals in Ohio. This summer he will team-teach a workshop in Bytom,
Poland in arts administration, fundraising/development, publicity, and
promotion.
