COLLEGE OF COMMUNICATION AND INFORMATION
KENT STATE UNIVERSITY
Kent State University seeks an experienced, principled, and creative leader
as the charter dean of its College of Communication and
Information. Combining nationally recognized schools of journalism and
mass communication, library and information science, communication studies,
and visual communication design, this innovative college represents an
unparalleled leadership opportunity for the knowledgeable individual in
these disciplines. As the chief administrative officer of the college, the
dean will be responsible for academic leadership, development activities,
financial management, personnel administration, and strategic
planning. The dean reports directly to the provost and is a member of the
University's Academic Affairs Council.
The new College of Communication and Information (CC&I)
(http://dept.kent.edu/cci/) consists of the Schools of Communication
Studies, Journalism and Mass Communication, Library and Information
Science, and Visual Communication Design. In addition, it houses a number
of institutes and centers, such as the Institute for Cyber Information, as
well as interdisciplinary programs such as the graduate program in
Information Architecture and Knowledge Management. The recent formation of
the college symbolizes Kent State's commitment to serve as a center of
innovation in the new information age. CC&I's focus is on the
collaboration necessary for graduates to succeed in the digital age,
through the creation of an infrastructure that supports multi-disciplinary
teaching and research. CC&I also promotes mutually beneficial partnerships
and collaborations both within and without the university. As leader of
this focused and strategic unit, the dean has direct responsibility for
approximately 50 full-time faculty, 16 staff and in excess of 2300 students.
Kent State University (http://www.kent.edu/) is an eight-campus, public
institution that enrolls approximately 34,000 students, including nearly
23,000 on its Kent campus. The institution is the leading public research
university in Northeast Ohio and is designated 'doctoral extensive' by the
Carnegie Foundation. Twenty-one doctoral programs are offered and
approximately 4500 students enroll in graduate programs campus-wide. Kent
State University is strongly committed to serving Northeast Ohio through
research, graduate studies, service and outreach programs. Kent, a
university-centered community of 25,000 residents, is located close to the
urban centers of Cleveland and Akron, offering faculty and staff the
opportunity to participate in numerous cultural, educational, recreational
and athletic activities.
Candidates should possess: the Ph.D. or terminal degree in one of the
disciplines represented in the college, or have demonstrated highly
distinguished performance within one or more of those disciplines; at least
5 years of proven leadership and management experience; a record of
scholarly and/or creative accomplishment appropriate to the rank of
professor in one of the schools within the college; experience with diverse
institutional populations; and demonstrated ability to communicate with a
variety of groups and individuals both internal and external to the university.
The appointment will begin as early as January 1, 2003 and no later than
