POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: LIBRARIAN, LINGNAN UNIVERSITY, HONG KONG

Lingnan University is a liberal arts institution in the Hong Kong
Special Administrative Region which offers honours bachelor degrees and
postgraduate programmes up to doctoral level. The Library and the
Information Technology Services Centre (ITSC) are two major IT-intensive
service units in the University. To better serve the teaching and
research goals of the University, they are charged with finding
innovative ways to bring about the synergy of the two units in the
development, advancement and integration of the University information
resources. The University is now seeking two high calibre senior staff
members to lead these two important units in meeting the exciting
challenges in the 21st century.

LIBRARIAN, LIBRARY (Post Ref. : 0208/LIB/LIB)

The Library holds a collection of 350,000 items, has an annual budget
exceeding HK$8 million, and has around 35 professional librarians and
supporting staff. The Library is an innovative unit with a proactive and
user-oriented culture. Its strengths are in the arts and humanities,
social sciences and business. Electronic resources are extensively used
to serve the research and teaching goals of the university community.
The Library utilizes the Millennium version of the Innopac Library
System.

Reporting to the Chief Information Officer and together with the
Director of ITSC, the Librarian is responsible for creative leadership
of the library and administration of the University's information
resources services. He/She will oversee strategic, fiscal and
operational responsibilities for all aspects of library services, and
manage the operation and development of user services, the human
resources, budget, collections, physical facilities and new
technologies. Ideal candidates for the post will have training and/or
experience in information technology. The appointee will be expected to
work closely with the Director of ITSC on identifying possible areas of
further collaboration and the sharing of expertise and resources and
implementing such changes as will enhance this expected synergy.

Candidates are expected to possess the following qualifications and
attributes:
- qualifications in the field of librarianship and membership in
relevant professional institutions;
- at least 15 years of academic library experience, and at least 10
years at the management level;
- a strong vision and leadership for the future development of library
resources and services;
- a good understanding of recent IT and library information
developments;
- strong communication and interpersonal skills and a good track record
in managing people;
- the ability to foster effective working relationships with academic
bodies, staff and students;
- the following would be added advantages: good contacts with major
libraries in the region, services to international library bodies, and a
record of research and publications.

SALARY AND FRINGE BENEFITS:

The monthly salary range (under review) is HK$75,345 - HK$101,215
(appro. exchange rate US$1-HK$7.8). Commencing salary will be
commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits include
medical and dental schemes, annual leave, MPF benefit, gratuity and,
where appropriate, housing benefits for the eligible appointees.
